Gardening Essentials Course – Coming Soon

June 18 @ 9:30 am - 2:30 pm

This exciting new course is being designed, here is what we have so far:

Become a garden expert with this 12-month course that follows the seasons to provide a year of fundamental growing skills.

This course is suitable for those interested in growing a few more veges and fruit trees as well as those with a profit from harvest in mind. You’ll get your hands dirty and your thumbs green in the stunning backdrop of Plenty Permaculture located in Whakamarama. We’ll spend time examining soil, using USB microscopes to check out bugs, practicing taking cuttings, grafting and seasonal pruning, all while developing a portfolio of crop knowledge to support your gardening hobby or business. With a dedicated cottage classroom and Abundant Backyard market garden happening on site, this is an ideal opportunity to learn essential skills.

Curriculum: Over 14 classroom days, about one per 3-4 weeks,  you will learn:
-Plant propagation, 4 days
-Understanding soils, 3 days
-Managing pests, diseases and weeds, 3 days
-Companion planting, plants for bird and insect retention,  1 day
-Forest garden design for the BOP, 1 day
-Fruit tree pruning, summer and winter, 2 days

Tutors: The primary tutor is Kazel Cass, with a degree in horticulture and teaching.   Guests tutors will include permaculture designer Catherine Dunton-McLeod.

Tuition: TBA: We are currently working on funding so we can offer you this material at the most affordable price possible.  We prefer small classes <15 participants,  to maximise your learning experience.  Tuition will include all workbooks, plant materials, and planting mixes.  We will have a few payment options including two internships. Stay tuned.

Internships: We are happy to offer a reduction in tuition to two people who have extra time and can assist us in preparing and breaking down the courses.  You can get in touch with Catherine if this is of interest.

Time Commitment:  In addition to the 84 classroom hours, there will be a homework requirement with supporting videos to watch and a crop research project that will help you to develop a production plan for a crop of your choice. Depending on your enthusiasm, that could take 10-30 hours.
