Soil is a miracle. We grow food from it, walk on it, we build with it. We have the ability to harm or enrich it with the choices we make, and thereby harm or enrich ourselves and the other species with whom we share this planet.
We’ll cover the soil fundamentals: chemistry, physical aspects and biology: “the soil food web.” Also plant root and soil interactions. Creating healthy soil: composting (hot, cold and warm), sheet mulching, compost teas and cover crops. Reclaiming damaged soil, stopping erosion and nutrient leaching. Soil tests. Plant succession, weed management and disease suppression. What weeds tell you about your soil.
We’ll ask you to bring soil from your own property and give you an introduction to visual soil assessment and plant indications. We’ll then discuss strategies for amending your own soil conditions.

Feedback
“I really loved the class today. I found it so exciting and I feel very positive about what I am doing at home. Cherryle is just wonderful: passionate and inspiring. I love her teaching style. She should write a book!”
“Seeing the visual soil assessment of a soil sample from my yard and getting a chance to use the refractometer on plant leaves was great.”
“I enjoyed being in the small group this afternoon and hearing different perspectives. I’ve done tons of reading and am really familiar with the theory of permaculture and of my own biases. It was great to hear everyone else’s insights and to break out of my own limitations. “
