In this module, we’ll cover the basics of permaculture and biointensive gardening via reading and video links and then a day together in the garden with a very experienced permaculture gardener, Brad Harding. We’ll look at: year round garden planning for maximum food production and soil building; soil and garden bed preparation by double digging, using a broad fork, what is bio char?, and we’ll make a “no-turn” compost in the bio intensive style. Then we’ll shift to seed growing, collecting, processing, and storing; we’ll make seed raising mix, get you “pricking out” seedlings, then planting seedlings in the optimal spacing and patterns. In the time remaining, we’ll discuss hugelkulture beds, wicking drums and trade gardening secrets!

” I liked the intimate crew, everyone asking lots of questions; finally I understand what double digging is!! And I am going to incorporate a broad fork into my existing garden beds ASAP.”
“I loved seeing the different methods of seed saving and making bio-char. I’m fizzing to get back to my place and start doing both these things.”
“We had a blast making the compost pile and I’ll keep the recipe where I can find it every fall!”
“Wicking drums are so great! I’m going to cover my back balcony with them and then when I move I can take my garden with me.”
