Although, we pay little attention to them, \u201cbugs” area critical\u00a0part of maintaining a healthy planet, our parks, forests, gardens,
\nlocal and global food production.<\/p>\n

The best time to learn about our Bay of Plenty insects, is in the summer when they are most active. \u00a0Thus, we\u2019ve scheduled this course for two summer days: \u00a0Saturday, 1 December 2018 and 9 February 2019. \u00a0<\/p>\n

We’ll hold it at the rural, 10 acre\u00a0Plenty Permaculture Cottage, where we have lots of bugs to get to know!\u00a0<\/p>\n

Topics will include:<\/p>\n

\n
• Insect identification and monitoring<\/li>\n
• Using lenses and USB microscopes to view bugs up close<\/li>\n
• The pest\/predator relationship. Switching the focus from pest control to increasing biodiversity<\/li>\n
• Planting to attract beneficials\u00a0<\/li>\n
• Selecting plants for resistance and appropriate planting<\/li>\n
• Organic, sustainable pest management strategies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

  Students will want to bring any bugs from home they can find, and\/or damaged plants for identification.\u00a0<\/p>\n

  <\/p>\n

  The best bug book is Managing Pests and Diseases<\/em> by Rob Lucas. Students may wish to get a copy from the library before class or scroll Trademe, as it is out of print.<\/p>\n

  Minimum numbers to hold the course is 6 and we’ll start a waiting list at 20.<\/p>\n

  The tuition is $90 for both two days:\u00a0Saturday 1 December (2018) and 9 February (2019), 9:30-2:30.\u00a0<\/p>\n

  Please plan to bring a lunch as we are K’s away from stores or restaurants. \u00a0A full kitchen is available and tea and coffee will be provided.<\/p>\n

  You’ll receive an orienting email two weeks before the first day with detailed information on times, \u00a0directions, \u00a0what to bring, etc.<\/p>\n
